Port Dalhousie Harbour Rehabilitation

Project Overview

In 2018, Bronte Construction embarked on a 28-month journey to restore the Port Dalhousie Pier Harbour and provide a safe setting for residents and visitors to enjoy the city’s scenic Lake Ontario waterfront. This was a massive undertaking involving innovative techniques and strategic planning. Over 2,500 meters of sheet pile seawall was installed, as well as rock berms on the outer ends of the pier, protecting the shoreline and pier from erosion for years to come. This pier has always been an important community landmark in St Catherines, and we are honoured to have contributed to its successful restoration and reopening for everyone to enjoy!

Scope of Work

• Installation of over 2,500 meters of sheet pile seawall, carried out from multiple barges
• Placement of 100,000 metric tonnes of armour stone revetment and associated in-water work
• Pouring 3,000 cubic meters of concrete for the pier and slab refacing
• Grout injection, and installation of rock berms installed on the outer ends of the pier to protect it from the erosive forces of Lake Ontario
• Install 571 meters of 6.67-foot anchor wall, 1,254 meters of 45-foot XZ-95 sheet pile, and 684 meters of 35-foot EZ-95 sheet pile, accurately positioned along the harbour piers
• Innovative techniques such as soldier H-beams for false work guides and the strategic placement of tie backs every 2.5 meters between sheet piles
• Extensive environmental control measures
