Employment requirements

  • A university degree in civil engineering or a college diploma in construction technology is usually required.
  • A master's degree in project management or development is preferred.
  • Several years of experience in the civil construction industry, including experience as a construction supervisor or field superintendent, are usually required.
  • Extensive experience in the construction industry may substitute for post-secondary education requirements.
  • Professional engineering status or construction trade certification may be required by some employers.

Construction managers perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate construction projects from start to finish according to schedule, specifications and budget
  • Prepare and submit construction project budget estimates
  • Plan and prepare construction schedules and milestones and monitor progress against established schedules
  • Prepare contracts and negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Develop and implement quality control programs
  • Represent company on matters such as business services and union contracts negotiation
  • Prepare progress reports and issue progress schedules to clients
  • Direct the purchase of building materials and land acquisitions
  • Hire and supervise the activities of subcontractors and subordinate staff.

Construction Foreman

Your role

In the role of Construction Foreman, you’ll report to The Site Superintendent or Field Manager – Self-perform, and will support day-to-day site operations. Some of your daily activities and responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Superintendent with the field operations of projects, including the coordination and management of multiple subcontractors and site labourers;
  • Assisting with project cost controls by identifying ways to save money and limit unnecessary expenditures;
  • Developing high-performing teams through the creation of positive and productive working relationships with all levels of employees and contractors;
  • Helping meet or exceed our clients’ expectations related to the overall quality of work;
  • Acting as a coach, motivator and facilitator with your team to ensure project milestones, budgetary constraints and quality and aesthetic concerns are being met or exceeded;
  • Providing input on staff performance evaluations, including evaluation of functional responsibilities, individual assessment of performance and contribution to team members’ professional development;
  • Acting always with the utmost professional integrity and in the best interests of NGC.
  • Providing support in the production of critical documentation, including field meeting agendas, meeting minutes and action plans, delivering appropriate follow-up as required.

Your Knowledge, Skills and Experience

As Construction Foreman, you’ll work independently and with others, depending on the scope of work, and will:

  • Have at least five years of civil construction experience in the capacity of Construction Foreman, on projects valued up to $10M;
  • Be highly organized and achievement-oriented with strong personal drive;
  • Be an effective communicator, capable of developing and maintaining healthy relationships;
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of success assisting with budgeting, coordinating and scheduling of on-site activities for construction projects, from start-up through total performance of the work, in alignment with pre-stated project goals;
  • Demonstrate a strong track record and commitment to site safety;
  • Possess a keen sense of what things cost and know how to get things done cost effectively;
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of the technical foundation of various building types, traditional sub-contractor work scopes, construction systems and methods, construction specifications, construction tendering practices and contract types, scheduling methods, and cost/change order control and forecasting techniques;
  • Demonstrate proven skills as a team leader, coach, motivator, facilitator, people developer, consensus builder and problem solver;
  • Be proficient in the use of basic computer systems (MS Excel, Outlook, Word);
  • Understand how your activities fit in the big picture in order to establish priorities, particularly with respect to manpower availability; and
  • Demonstrate the ability to motivate others outside the position's direct authority to take action and initiative.
